Premiere Pro Captions: Complete 2026 Guide

Premiere Pro can create native editable captions, import and export SRT files, and style subtitle tracks. Per-word animated captions need graphics, MOGRTs, or a dedicated plugin.

direct answer

For standard subtitles, use Premiere's Text panel and native caption track. Transcribe the sequence, correct the transcript, create captions, then apply one Track Style. Use SRT when text must travel to YouTube, a translator, or another editor. Use graphics, MOGRTs, or a caption plugin only when the words need motion.

01 · terminology

Captions, subtitles, and burned-in text

Captions can include speech, speaker identification, and meaningful sound information for accessibility. Subtitles usually represent speech for viewers who can hear the audio, often in another language.

Premiere places both on caption tracks, and everyday creator workflows often use the words interchangeably. Burned-in captions become part of the picture. They cannot be switched off, but they preserve the exact social-video style.

02 · native workflow

Create editable captions with Speech to Text

  1. 1

    Open the Text panel

Choose Window, Text, then open the Transcript tab in the active sequence.

  2. 2

    Transcribe the sequence

Select the dialogue tracks or In and Out range, set the spoken language, and run transcription.

  3. 3

    Correct the transcript

Fix names, numbers, punctuation, speaker labels, and sentence boundaries before creating captions.

  4. 4

    Create and style captions

Choose format, length, duration, and gap. Apply a Track Style once, then check every line in Program Monitor.

03 · animated workflow

Add motion only when the format needs it

Native caption tracks are excellent for editability, but they do not reproduce per-word pops, karaoke fills, or active-word boxes. For a few hero lines, upgrade captions to graphics and keyframe them. For a full short-form video, use MOGRTs or a caption plugin with word timing.

Start with two to four words per group, one active-word accent, a heavy readable font, and lower-middle placement. Follow the visual CapCut-style workflow or compare every method in the animated caption guide.

04 · SRT workflow

Move text and timing without carrying style

An SRT file stores cue numbers, timecodes, and plain text. It does not store fonts, colours, position, or animation. Import it by dropping the file into the Project panel, then drag it onto the sequence to create a caption track.

Export SRT for YouTube accessibility, translation, or handoff. Export burned-in captions when the style must always appear. The complete Premiere SRT guide covers import, export, styling, and common failures.

05 · plugin workflow

Use a plugin when word timing repeats every week

A dedicated plugin can transcribe dialogue with word-level timestamps, apply reusable animation, and place the result on a new track. Check whether its output is a native caption track, live MOGRTs, rendered media, or a mixture. That choice determines revision speed and timeline load.

Caption Plug offers local Whisper plus editable or rendered output. See the word-by-word workflow, the auto-censor workflow, or the best Premiere Pro caption plugins comparison.
